Happy news! The Buddhist Association of the United States has awarded me its annual “Buddhist of the Year” award in recognition of my efforts to promote “peace of mind, wisdom of life” in keeping with the principles of dharma. I am, of course, delighted—and surprised, considering that I’m a Roman Catholic (and a somewhat public one at that). Still, my near-total rejection of Buddhist philosophy won’t stop me from accepting this great honor.
OK, that didn’t actually happen. But Anne Applebaum—the ultra-hawkish author and columnist, who has yet to come across a Western military intervention that didn’t send her salivary glands running—has been selected for the 2024 Peace Prize of the German Book Trade. Cheering the award on the app formerly known as Twitter, the German ambassador to Washington, Andreas Michaelis, praised Applebaum for speaking out “in defense of freedom and peace.”
